Pendleton Woolen Mills Launches New Branding Campaign

One of Oregon’s oldest and best-loved companies has launched a new image and branding campaign created by Portland marketing firm Leopold Ketel & Partners.

Called the “Grit Campaign,” it was created to support merchandise developed by Pendleton Woolen Mills as the official licensee of the Pendleton Round-Up.

The western heritage of Pendleton Woolen Mills is celebrated in posters and print ads that portray the company’s long history in the West. Ads in the national luxury western magazine Cowboys & Indians and in the upscale Bend Living magazine feature authentic bronco-busting and cattle round-up photography. They were shot on ranches in the Pendleton area using working cowboys rather than models and actors.

A corporate video highlights the 100th anniversary of the creation of the company’s famous blanket mill in Pendleton, Ore.

LKP’s work also appears on a wallscape near Pendleton Woolen Mills’ corporate headquarters in Portland at 210 N.W. Broadway. Being distributed this fall is the new catalog LKP designed to showcase PMW’s anniversary collection of men’s and women’s western-style clothing and household décor that commemorates the company’s 100th anniversary in 2009.

LKP staff working on the campaign were Jerry Ketel, creative director and senior partner; Brian Dixon, art director; Jason Maurer, writer; and Terra Spencer, account director. The agency partnered with Chris Gordaneer, a Toronto photographer and Portland director Rob Tyler for the video.

The shoot netted Gordaneer a spot in the “200 Best Photographers in the World” annual edition and recognition in Creative Arts, a highly regarded magazine presenting the best creative work in the USA.
